Improving TotalEnergies Environmental Footprint Through Solar Energy

As part of TotalEnergies Marketing South Africa’s commitment to the group’s vision as a leading energy brand, the company is committed to finding alternative ways to better energy through two solar energy projects, namely the Prieska Power Plant project in the Northern Cape in South Africa and its innovative first consumer-orientated range of portable solar products.

TotalEnergies Marketing South Africa and SunPower make provision for alternative energy through solar power generation plant in South Africa

In April, TotalEnergies company affiliate SunPower announced that it had broken ground in building the massive Prieska Power Plant project in the Northern Cape in South Africa.

SunPower secured the project under a project development agreement with a consortium including South African Mulilo Solar Enterprises and the TotalEnergies. The consortium was selected as the preferred bidder in the third phase of South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) to build an 86MWp PV power plant using SunPower’s ‘Oasis Power Blocks’ integrated system.

The project will deliver clean, reliable energy and is expected to generate some 210 gigawatt-hours of power each year. This represents the electricity consumption of about 45,000 South Africans.  The electricity is sold to the national power utility – Eskom – under a power purchase agreement.

Completion is due in 2016. The project is financed largely through non-recourse project debt from Total Group, a number of South African banks as well as funding partners Calulo Renewable Energy, Mulilo Renewable Energy, the IDC, Futuregrowth Asset Management (Pty) Ltd and a Local Community Trust, based on their respective ownership interests.

TotalEnergies Marketing South Africa has taken a bold step into the future as an alternative energy solutions provider through the launch of its first consumer-orientated range of portable solar products. Awango by Total is an innovative range of portable lighting products each complete with its own mini self-sustaining solar panel.  The innovative range of Awango lighting solutions provides a cost-effective, sustainable and safe way to light up your home. The portable products provide excellent lighting and cell-phone charging capacity to South Africans and Africans in Namibia, Botswana  and Swaziland (NBLS) countries – especially those living in remote areas.

TotalEnergies Marketing South Africa is working in partnership with selected NGO’s SaveAct and Corc to create a unique distribution and selling channel aimed at providing jobs within communities located outside of the retail footprint that may be far away from service stations.

The initial rollout of the product took place in 2013 and 2014 in the Mpumalanga, Kwazulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces of South Africa. The product is now available in more than 400 TotalEnergies Marketing South Africa and it's service stations in Namibia, Botswana and Swaziland.
