TotalEnergies Facilitating a Sustainable Future

In South Africa, TotalEnergies and its affiliate SunPower, the world’s second-largest solar energy company1 completed two South African ground-mount solar power projects totalling 33 megawatts (MW) in April 2014. Both projects are located near Douglas, South Africa in the Northern Cape Province and have numerous benefits to the community and the environment.

These two solar power projects have been an all-around winner for the region with local construction jobs, increased production for the Cape Town manufacturing facility and clean, reliable future energy”, stated Howard Wenger, SunPower Regions President.

From Design to Implementation Stage

Both projects are part of the South African government’s Independent Power Producers Procurement Program. SunPower was appointed by AE-AMD Renewable Energy2 developers as the Engineering, Construction and Procurement (EPC) on both projects, based on its extensive utility-scale solar projects track record and local manufacturing facility.

SunPower was responsible for both sites from the design to the implementation stage. Construction was completed on Herbert, the first 22MW site. This plant consists of 91,908 modules mounted on 3,996 single-axis trackers, each in a monopole foundation. Each tracker carries 23 PV modules. The second site, namely Greefspan, an 11 MW was commissioned in April 2014. Using a similar approach as for the Herbert site, this smaller plant consists of a field of 1,998 single-axis trackers, using a total of 45,954 modules.

Investing in the Local Community

SunPower has worked closely with the local Municipality in Douglas to ensure employment opportunities for the community during the period of construction and beyond. During the construction period, both projects created over 7000 jobs for the surrounding community. The two power plants feature 137,862 solar modules and all of these modules were produced at the Cape Town manufacturing facility. The Herbert and Greefspan sites are both running efficiently with six permanent SunPower staff assigned to manage the operations and maintenance of the plants.

Part of the Group’s overriding mission is to enable as many people as possible to access energy in a world of constantly growing demand. Since the beginning, the TotalEnergies company has committed to high environmental standards, empowerment and socio-economic development in delivering on its brand promise of being committed to better energy.
