Greg, Managing Director of Utshani Fund

Greg is the Managing Director of the uTshani Fund, and has been part of the organisation for 12 years. The uTshani Fund was started in 1995 as the financial arm of the Federation of the Urban Poor  (FEDUP). Today, they are part of Total South Africa's Awango Solar Project, the company's solar energy initiative.

What is the Awango Solar Project?

The Awango Solar Project provides solar-powered light and energy to informal settlements as a cleaner, safer common source of power, instead of candles or paraffin.

What is Total South Africa’s role in the project?

As a company committed to promoting and delivering better energy, Total South Africa is the driver behind this project. Together with the uTshani Fund, Total South Africa supports disadvantaged communities, empowering job opportunities, and thereby improving the standard of living.

What opportunities does the project provide and what are the benefits for community members?

The project offers a broad base of income opportunities for unemployed youth such as sales training and reselling of solar lights. Opportunities are open to all active FEDUP members who are willing to participate in the programme.

What is Total South Africa's role in the initiative?

Although we’re still in the early stages, the project  has been rolled out successfully in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the North West Province, with the aim of reaching the remainder of the country in due course.

What is the vision for the project as you move forward?

Our goal? A candle-free community throughout South Africa. With Total South Africa, we look forward to the continued search to find better ways for better, safer energy for a better life in informal settlements.

“Total South Africa supports disadvantaged communities, empowering job opportunities, and thereby improving the standard of living.“
